Dr. John Kirwan legacy

Dr. John L. Kirwan identified the area that became the Solid Gold claim block as a highly prospective structural setting near Lake Abitibi and the Holt-Holloway mine complex.

On his recommendation, Tangcoh Gold was formed and staked the initial claim block in 2007.

Profile

A long-time Timmins geologist

Dr. Kirwan was a consulting geologist and long-time Timmins resident whose doctoral thesis examined the geology of the Porcupine Gold Camp. His career included important mineral discoveries and mineral reserve contributions, including work along what is often referred to as the Golden Highway.

In 1961, he was part of a pioneering Hollinger Mines exploration team that worked to define, locate, survey and drill the then-unmapped Porcupine-Destor Fault eastward toward Val d'Or, Quebec. That work led to the St. Andrews Goldfields discovery in Stock Township.

Kirwan thesis for Solid Gold

The 2023 update states that Dr. Kirwan viewed the structural geology of the Solid Gold claims, adjacent to the Holt-Holloway Mine Complex, as similar to the settings of the Timmins Hollinger and McIntyre gold mines, where he served as exploration manager in the 1960s.

Project Genesis

From Tangcoh Gold to Solid Gold Resources Corp.

Kirwan's expertise and knowledge of the area led to the creation of Tangcoh Gold, now Solid Gold Resources Corp., in 2007 and the acquisition of the large claim block adjacent to the Holloway Mine. Early work identified a granitic intrusion and nearby gold showings, while earlier basal till drilling south and down-ice of the target area returned values up to 31,000 ppb gold, or 31 g/t.

The 2026 AAN arrangement agreement represents a new chapter for the same claim package, with a structure intended to resolve past disputes and return the land position to responsible exploration with Indigenous ownership and leadership.

Timeline

Key moments in the Solid Gold story

  1. Tangcoh Gold is formed and stakes the initial claim block on Dr. Kirwan's recommendation.
  2. Dr. Kirwan passes away; technical report work is revised and finalized by William E. MacRae, P.Geo.
  3. Tangcoh Gold changes its corporate name to Solid Gold Resources Corp.
  4. Solid Gold completes an IPO on the TSX Venture Exchange and funds Phase 1 exploration.
  5. Phase 1 drilling completes 28 NQ holes totaling 10,463 metres of core and identifies multiple zones of mineralization.
  6. Founder Andre Tanguay regains control through a shareholder proxy vote.
  7. Solid Gold announces the AAN arrangement agreement to launch an Indigenous-led exploration company on Treaty 9 lands.

Continuity

The same geological idea, a new governance model

The AAN arrangement agreement connects the original geological thesis behind Solid Gold with a new structure focused on Indigenous ownership, community priorities, environmental stewardship and renewed exploration.

Legacy

Kirwan's regional experience helped define the original exploration thesis and claim selection.

Future

The 2026 arrangement agreement is designed to return the mineral tenure to exploration under Indigenous leadership.
